Mogadishu, Somalia – Focus Institute, And Somali Institute for Peace (SIP), successfully convened a high-level panel discussion at Heritage Hotel, Mogadishu, bringing together experts, researchers, and stakeholders to deliberate on Somalia’s political future, governance reforms, and electoral processes.
The event was officially opened by Mr. Ahmed Guutaalle, Deputy Director of Focus Institute and Director of Focus Plus Forum. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the importance of addressing critical national issues, particularly the ongoing debate between indirect and direct elections. He noted that a credible and inclusive electoral system is essential for strengthening democratic governance and advancing Somalia’s state-building agenda.
The panel featured Mr. Mohamed Mukhtar, a respected researcher and former official at the Ministry of Petroleum and Minerals of the Federal Government of Somalia, as the guest speaker. Drawing on his extensive experience, Mr. Mohamed shared valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges facing Somalia’s political transition, governance structures, and institutional development.
The discussion was professionally moderated by Mr. Zakaria Fodade, Director of Focus Institute, who facilitated an engaging and thought-provoking dialogue among participants. The session explored key issues related to electoral reform, political accountability, democratic participation, and the institutional frameworks required to achieve sustainable peace and development.
Participants examined the implications of both indirect and direct electoral models, highlighting the need for transparent, legitimate, and inclusive processes that reflect the aspirations of the Somali people.
